Bryant Basketball Falls 89-64 to Notre Dame in Season Opener

In the last three seasons, Bryant basketball has opened on the road against UConn, Duke, and now this season the Bulldogs opened up against ACC power Notre Dame, losing 89-64 in South Bend, Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

"These games give you great exposure and great experience. It's a great learning curve for our team to play a program like Notre Dame and great going forward as we return home before another tough matchup at Gonzaga next week,” said Bryant head coach Tim O’Shea.

Despite the final score, Bryant was competitive for most of the game, taking a 19-15 lead midway through the first half on a three-pointer by Nisre Zouzoua. The Irish would erase that lead with a 7-0 run to go up 22-19 with 7:35 to play in the half and would not trail again in the game.

The Irish would close the half on a 15-6 run and lead 43-31 at the half.

In the second, Notre Dame would build up as much as a 14 point lead in the first five minutes of the half. The Bulldogs would again claw back, cutting their deficit to single digits, 55-47, with 13 minutes to play after Zouzoua and freshman Adam Grant knocked down threes.

Again, Notre Dame would respond, and this time their response put the game out of reach. The Irish went on an 11-2 run to take a 66-49 lead with just under 10 minutes left to play. They would build their lead to 22 points and cruise the rest of the way.

"Going into the game I thought we would be competitive and we certainly were for most of the day, which is what you want to see in games like this," said Tim O'Shea.

Underclassmen Impress

For Bryant, the biggest takeaway in this game was the play of the freshmen, as well as Zouzoua.

Zouzoua led the Bulldogs with 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field, knocking down two three-pointers. He was the only starter to reach double figures, and played more minutes then anyone else on the roster.

Three freshmen saw significant action in the game, highlighted by forward Sebastian Townes.

Townes poured in 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field, while grabbing four rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench.

Ikenna Ndugba got the start and played 30 minute, dishing out five assists and grabbing three rebounds. Ndugba went 4 of 10 from the field for eight points.

The third freshman, Adam Grant, played 26 minutes off the bench an showed the ability to knock down threes, going 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point line. Grant went 4 of 6 from the field overall for 13 points while grabbing three rebounds and recording four assists.

"Our young players were tremendous today, and we showed that we have the pieces that can make up a formidable team not just in the non-conference but once NEC play rolls around. Sabastian, Adam, Ikenna and Nisre were not shy or nervous about the opponent and the stage and really impressed,” said O’Shea.
