Former Brown Basketball Star Huffman to Play for Team USA in FIBA World Cup 3x3

Damon Huffman at Brown
Former Brown basketball star Damon Huffman will be one of four players suiting up for Team USA in the 2017 FIBA World Cup 3x3 tournament in Nantes, France later this month.

Huffman, who scored 1,306 career points and graduated as Brown’s all-time leading three-point shooter, a record that has since been broken by Sean McGonagill and most recently JR Hobbie, hopes his success at Brown and later in the pros in Belgium translates to a USA program that hasn’t had much success in the 3 vs 3 tournament.

In the previous three tournaments, Team USA has come away with one medal, a silver in 2016.

“I’ve been playing 3 vs 3 my whole life, since back at Brown and then playing in some cash tournaments,” Huffman said of his 3 vs 3 experience.

The 3 vs 3 World Cup runs from June 17 to June 22.

Team USA

Huffman will be joined in France by teammates Craig Moore, a 2009 graduate of Northwestern University, Dan Mavraides, a 2011 graduate of Princeton University and Zahir Carrington, a 2010 graduate of Lehigh University.

“One of the things that we have established is that threes are more important than twos, and so that is how we have built our team," he added.

Moore knocked down a school record 110 three-pointers during his senior season and led the Big Ten with an average of 3.5 three-pointers made per game. Mavraides graduated Princeton as the 25th leading scorer in program history with 1,054 points. Carrington was a second team All-Patriot League, averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds per game.

Team USA enters the tournament as the #4 overall seed and is in Pool D with the Netherlands, New Zealand, Indonesia and South Korea. The tournament is set up similar to the FIFA World Cup with group play followed by elimination rounds.

The first game for Team USA is on June 17 against the Netherlands.

Road to France

Huffman and his team began their journey in Colorado Springs, Colorado with a national tournament hosted by USA Basketball at the Olympic Training Facility.

“Me and my teammates were invited to play in Colorado Springs against teams that consisted of European pros and guys that just graduated college, literally just finished the NCAA Tournament, and we ended up winning the tournament. That means we represent Team USA in all the tournaments that they earmarked for us,” Huffman said.

Huffman, who retired from pro basketball in 2013 and currently works in Michigan, is excited to get back on the floor.

"The funny thing is I’ve been retired from basketball, I played pro until 2013, and since then I haven’t really been training, but now that competitive spirit is starting to come back."

Huffman added,“my teammates and I were all basketball players, now considered retired, but to have another chance, to have basketball open up this door has been pretty special and to be able to wear the USA on my chest is going to be a great feeling,” Huffman said.

The Biggest Challenge - the Rules

The biggest adjustment for this 3 vs 3 basketball tournament is the rules.

The game is played on a half court with a running 10-minute game clock and a 12-second shot clock.

There are no stoppages, except if the ball goes out of bounds or there is a foul.

Following a score, players just take the ball out of the basket and go, there is no inbounding.

“The games are only 10 minutes and it is a running clock so when you step on the floor you have to perform. It is basically like running 800s for 10 minutes straight because you're just running constantly. As soon as you score, you turn right back around, its like full court pressing the entire time,” Huffman said.
