Langevine's Double-Double Leads URI Past LIU Brooklyn 76-65

Cyril Langevine poured in 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team to a 76-65 win over LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center.

The double-double was the 24th of Langevine’s career, after he had 17 double-doubles last season.

The Rams open the season with a record of 1-0, while LIU starts 0-1.

URI Holds Off LIU

The Rams led 19-14 with 8:33 left to play in the half before a layup by Langevine and a three by Tyrese Martin sparked URI to a 7-3 run to take a 26-17 with 5:11 to play in the half.

They would take a 36-28 lead into the half.

The Rams would open the second half by going on a 15-5 run capped off by a Jeff Dowtin three to take a 51-33 lead with 12:15 to play in the game.

LIU Brooklyn would get back to within eight, 61-53, after two free throws from Virshon Cotton.

On URI’s next possession, Dowtin would knock down a jump shot to push the lead back to double digits.

From there, URI’s Dana Tate would knock down two free throws and Langevine would convert back-to-back dunks to push the Rams lead to 69-57 with 2:47 to play.

LIU Brooklyn would not get closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Fatts Russell led URI with 18 points, seven assists, and four rebounds, while Dowtin added 13 points and six rebounds.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, November 9 when they visit #7 Maryland.
