Spieth's 33 Points Not Enough as Brown Falls to Yale 75-74 in Thriller

Steven Spieth went for 30 points but it was not enough
Steven Spieth poured in a career-high 33 points, including seven three-pointers, but it was not enough as the Brown Bears fell to Yale 75-74 at the Pizzitola Center on Friday night.

"We made big shots, Steven obviously made some huge ones, and they just made one more play. You have to credit James and his staff for that," said Brown head coach Mike Martin after the game. "Credit them, we have to learn for this and get ready for them again on next Friday," he added.

Brown falls to 1-2 in the Ivy League and 10-9 overall. Yale improves to 2-1 in the Ivy League and 10-6 overall.

Brown Comes up Short

With Brown trailing by three, 74-71, Spieth knocked down a three with seven seconds left to tie the game at 74.

On Yale's next possession, Alex Copeland was fouled by Tavon Blackmon with 2.9 seconds left. Copeland went to the free throw line and made one of two shots to give the Bulldogs a 75-74 lead.

Brown had one chance to win the game with 2.9 seconds to play, but a JR Hobbie three off an inbound pass from Spieth fell short.

"We didn't do a bad job executing it, they just took away a couple of our options," Martin said about the final play.

The Bears led 40-28 at the half when the Bulldogs opened the second half on a 17-3 run to take a 45-43 lead with 11:52 to play. To this point, the Bears only had one field goal in the half.

"Obviously we didn't score the ball to start in that first four minutes before the media timeout, but if we could have gotten a couple more stops, maybe a little less momentum. We knew we were getting good shots and that they were going to fall, we just got to get a couple more stops," said Spieth after the game.

The Bears hold a 61-57 lead with 5:10 to play before the Bulldogs would score five straight points to take the lead back.

Neither team would lead by more than four points the rest of the way.

Brown Takes Control

With the game tied at 6 with just over 16 minutes left in the first half, a Spieth three sparked Brown to a 16-7 run to take a 22-13 lead after JR Hobbie three went down with 12:23 left to play.

Yale would climb back ti within two, 22-20, with 7:32 to play before the Bears would again extend their lead back to give on a Spieth three.

The rest of the half, the Bears would get threes from Obi Okolie, Corey Daugherty and Chris Sullivan to help them to an 18-6 run to close the half.

The Bears would take a 40-28 lead into the half.

The Bears shot only 36% from the field in the first half, but knocked down eight threes in the half to take a commanding lead.

The Leaders

Spieth's 33 points came on 9 of 13 shooting from the field and 7 of 10 shooting from three. He was also 8 of 9 from the free throw line.

"The ball has been feeling good coming out of my hands the last few days and the first few went down so anytime I was open I was just letting it fly," Spieth said.

Okolie followed up with 17 points in the game.
