Patriots Defense: With and Without Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis
The New England Patriots (5-0) host the (4-1) New York Jets on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in a battle for first place in the AFC East.

The Jets coming into town means the return of Darrelle Revis, the superstar corner back who left after just one season and a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots to play for the Jets, the team he started his career with.

The loss of Revis has put Malcolm Butler in the number one corner position, with Logan Ryan serving as the number two corner while Tarrell Brown is out for the season.

With Revis coming back as a Jet, GoLocal used charts from GraphIQ and stats from Pro Football Reference to determine where this year's Patriots defense is without Revis to last season's Patriots defense with Revis through five games.

Without Revis Through 5 Games

Here is a look at the Patriots defensive numbers without Darrelle Revis this season. For those who are not fans of math, the Patriots give up about 20 points per game and an average of 356 yards per game, 241 of which have come through the air. New England has given up nine passing touchdowns so far this season.

The first chart shows the yardage breakdown per game while the second shows each defensive player's statistics so far this season.

In Summary

What the data shows is that through five games, the 2015 defense is not that far off from the 2014 defense with Revis. The data shows that opposing quarterbacks are not afraid to throw on the Patriots this season and that is where the major difference comes, not all that surprising. Most importantly, the extra yardage given up has not resulted in opponents points.

The Patriots play the Jets again in the second to last game of the season, it will be interesting to look at the numbers again when December 27th comes around.
