UPDATED: Patriots Release Reggie Wayne Upon His Request

Reggie Wayne
Veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne,36, asked to be and has been released by the New England Patriots, according to reports. Wayne signed with the Patriots in late August and played in two preseason games with the Patriots. It is unclear why Wayne asked for release, speculation is that he may retire.

"Obviously, Reggie's time here was brief but it only confirmed what I already thought - he is a true professional who represents every positive attribute a player should emulate. Our parting was mutually agreed uon and I am personally grateful to have worked with one of the great NFL players of the past two decades," Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said in a statement.

The Patriots gave Wayne a signing bonus of $450,000. If Wayne retires, the Patriots can pursue the $450K if they choose as it would be unearned.
