PC's Defense Comes Up Big, Beat Georgetown 60-57 in OT

The Providence College Friars  (13-4, 3-1) defeated long time Big East rival (10-5, 2-2) Georgetown University 60-57 in overtime as a a sold out crowd at the Dunkin' Donuts Center looked on. The Friars start 3-1 in the Big East for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

"it was a great team win, totally different game then at Marquette and at Butler, we got to find a way to score the ball, we played 45 minutes and scored 60 points," Providence College head coach Ed Cooley said after the game. The Friars shot just 31 percent from the field, the Hoyas only shot 37 percent.

Providence led 50-48 with 20 seconds left but the Hoyas tied it after Joshua Smith grabbed an offenseive rebound and put it back in, sending the game into overtime. 

Overtime

In the OT period, the Friars led 53-52 when Kris Dunn nailed a three to put Providence up 56-52, sending the building into a frenzy. Georgetown got to within one, 58-57, with 16 seconds left and trailed by three after Kris Dunn knocked down two free throws. 

The Hoyas had a final possession with ten seconds left but did not get a shot off as the Friars defense held their ground.

The Leaders

LaDontae Henton led the Friars with 19 points on four of 16 shooting from the field and ten of 14 from the free throw line. Henton also pulled down seven rebounds. 

Kris Dunn followed up with 16 points and nine assists, he also added three steals. 

The Hoyas were led by Joshua Smith who netted 15 points on five of nine shooting,  Smith also pulled down 12 rebounds. 

Next on the schedule

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, January 14 when they host St. Johns at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
