With the game tied at three in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Sox loaded the bases and then took the lead when Xander Bogaerts grounded into a fielders choice to score Mookie Betts and give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.

"I don't think [Kershaw] had the fastball command that he typically does, missing up in the zone," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said to MLB.com. "I don't think his slider had the depth that we're used to seeing. And those guys, to their credit, put some good at-bats on him. And we didn't play the defense that we typically do. I thought we left some outs out there, and it didn't make Clayton's job any easier." Kershaw took the loss (0-1). Matt Barnes got the win (1-0).

The Red Sox then added another run when Rafael Devers singled to right field to score Andrew Benintendi and give Boston a 5-3 lead. Benintendi went 4-for-5, with three singles and a double, drove in the first run of the game and scored three times.

After LA got one run back in the top of the seventh to cut Boston’s lead to 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Sox put the game away.

With two men on base, Nunez pinch hit for Devers and proceeded to belt a three-run home run into the Green Monster Seats to give Boston an 8-4 lead.

Craig Kimbrel closed the game in the ninth to seal Boston’s game one win.

"From the first at-bat, we put pressure on them," Sox manager Alex Cora said. "And that's what we do. We stayed off the edges of the strike zone, we attacked pitches in the middle of the zone, and we did an outstanding job offensively."

Sale Returns to the Mound

Chris Sale made the start for Boston, it was his first outing since game one of the ALCS.

After a dominant first inning, Sale went just four innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out seven batters.

He threw a total of 91 pitches.
