Red Sox Clinch AL East With 6-3 Win Over Astros

The Boston Red Sox won the AL East for the second straight year following their 6-3 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

The win marked the first time in franchise history that the Red Sox have won back-to-back AL East titles.

Boston improves to 93-68 on the season and avoids the potential for a one-game playoff with the Yankees.

The Red Sox will now face the Astros in the ALDS. The Yankees will face Minnesota in the Wildcard game. 

Red Sox Take Control

With the game scoreless in the fourth, Boston's Hanley Ramirez hit an RBI single to center to score Mookie Betts and give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Rafael Devers followed up with a double to center to score Mitch Moreland, increasing Boston’s lead to 2-0.

The Red Sox would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Benintendi singled home Xander Bogaerts to put Boston up 3-0.

Moreland followed with a double to center scoring two more runs and putting the Red Sox in control up 5-0.

The Astros would get two runs back in the seventh to cut Boston’s lead to 5-2, before Betts hit a home run in the bottom of the inning to extend Boston’s lead to 6-2.

Craig Kimbrel gave up a home run to Houston’s Brian McCann in the ninth before closing out the game and the division. 

Season Wraps up

The Red Sox and Astros will play the final game of the regular season on Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m.

The pitching matchup is scheduled for Boston’s Hector Velazqeuz against Houston’s Collin McHugh.

Chris Sale was supposed to start, but will rest given the game does not matter.
