Price Returns, Red Sox Fall to Rays 3-2

David Price returned to the Boston Red Sox and pitched two hitless innings in relief, but the Red Sox would fall to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

Price was active on Thursday and pitched for the first time since July 22 after being put on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation.

He recorded two strikeouts in his appearance.

The loss drops the Red Sox to 85-64 on the season. They maintain a three-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East with 13 games to play.

Rays Hold Off Red Sox

Trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run home after Brock Holt drew a lead off walk to tie the game at two.

Tampa would retake the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when Jesus Sucre hit a solo home run off Eduardo Rodriguez to put Tampa up 3-2.

In the top of the ninth, Boston’s Andrew Benintendi got on base with a single to center field. However, the game would end when Rajai Davis hit into a double play.

Next Up

The Red Sox return to action Monday, September 18 when they visit the Baltimore Orioles.

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Doug Fister against Baltimore’s Dylan Bundy.
