Red Sox Use Long Ball to Beat Yankees 4-1

The Boston Red Sox used three home runs and a dominant pitching performance from Doug Fister to beat the New York Yankees 4-1 on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

Fister gave up just four hits and one run while striking out five en route to his fourth win of the season.

The Red Sox improve to 77-58 on the season. They now have a 5 1/2 game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.

Red Sox Use Long Ball to Beat Yankees

With the Yankees leading 1-0 in the third, Boston’s Eduardo Nunez hit a two-run home run off of New York pitcher Sonny Gray to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. The homer was Nunez’s 12th of the season.

Andrew Benintendi hit a home run into the right field seats in the fifth inning to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead.

Hanley Ramirez added a home run in the 7th to give the Red Sox their winning margin.

Craig Kimbrel came on in the ninth to closed out his 32nd save of the season.

Pedroia Returns

Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to the lineup. He went 1-4 at the plate while playing six innings in the field.

He is not expected to play on Saturday.

Series Continues

The Red Sox and Yankees continue their series on Saturday, September 2 at 1 p.m.

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Drew Pomeranz against New York’s Masahiro Tanaka.
