Did the Red Sox Steal Signs From Yankees Using Apple Watches?

The Red Sox have admited to stealing signs using an Apple Watch
The Boston Red Sox used Apple Watches to steal signs from the New York Yankees, according to a report published in the New York Times.

According to the NYTimes, MLB investigators determined the Red Sox did steal the Yankees’ signs using an Apple Watch to communicate.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has filed a complaint that included “video the Yankees shot of the Red Sox dugout during a three-game series in Boston last month.”

According to the Times, the video shows Boston assistant athletic trainer, Jon Jochim, looking at his Apple Watch and then passing information to outfielder Brock Holt and second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was injured at the time, but in uniform.

In another video clip provided to the league, Pedroia is then seen passing the information to Chris Young.

When the commissioner’s office confronted the Red Sox, Boston admitted that their trainers had received signals from video replay personnel and then relayed that information to some players, reports the newspaper.

Red Sox Respond

When asked about it during his Tuesday afternoon press conference, Red Sox manager John Farrell said, “[we are] aware of the rule, electronic devices are not to be used in the dugout. But beyond that the only thing I can say is it’s a league matter at this point.”

According to the report, Farrell and Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski were unaware of the scheme.

The Times reports that the Red Sox filed a complaint against the Yankees, saying that the team uses a camera from its television network, YES, just to steal signs during games.

The Red Sox currently have a 2 1/2 game lead on the Yankees in the AL East.

Boston is getting set to play game two of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
