Missed Opportunities Cost Red Sox in 3-2 Loss to Astros

The Boston Red Sox missed another opportunity to clinch the AL East on Friday, falling 3-2 to the Houston Astros at Fenway Park.

Boston’s magic number is still one to clinch the division over the New York Yankees. New York is now two games back with two to go following a 4-0 win over Toronto.

The Red Sox are now 92-68 on the season.

Houston Takes Control

The Astros took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Alex Bregman hit a two-run home run into the Green Monster.

Bergman also gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

Red Sox Missed Chances

Rafael Devers hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to score Mitch Moreland and cut the Houston lead to 3-1.

Boston added another run in the bottom of the sixth to get to within one, 3-2.

The Red Sox would load the bases in the inning but Hanley Ramirez would ground out.

In the ninth, Ramirez doubled with two outs to put the tying run on second base.

Divers would end the game with a groundout.

Boston is now 1-4 on their homestand.

The Red Sox and Astros continue their series on Saturday, September 30  at 1 p.m.

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Drew Pomeranz against Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr.
