Spieth's Near Triple-Double Leads Brown Past Niagara 88-79

Steven Spieth nets 25 points to help Brown beat Niagara
Brown senior forward Steven Spieth fell one assist shy of recording only the third triple-double in Ivy League history as the Brown Bears beat Niagara 88-79 on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center.

"Obviously it helps when guys are making shots, you know we had alot of tough buckets. Points and rebounds i've done a few times in the past, and assists just come when guys are making shots and running good offense," Spieth said after the game.

Spieth poured in a career high 27 points, grabbed ten rebounds and nine assists to lead the Bears while also blocking one shot and recording two steals.

"Steven has been playing great all fall, all preseason and he certainly played great tonight, but alot of other guys stepped up as well," said Brown head coach Mike Martin in his post game press conference.

The win evens Brown's record at 1-1 on the season, while Niagara drops to 0-2.

Brown Holds Off Niagara

After leading 42-36 at the half, the Bears built up a ten point lead, 54-44, with 14 minutes left in the game before Niagara made a run.

Niagara went on an 8-0 run cutting Brown's lead to only two points, 54-52, with 12:14 to play. An Obi Okolie layup pushed Brown's lead back to four points, 58-52, before Niagara would again get within two points, 58-56, with 10:56 to play.

Niagara would get no closer.

A Spieth layup with 9:16 to play capped off a 6-2 run by Brown to give them a 64-58 lead.  A big part of Spieth's game was getting to the free throw line, where he got there 22 times.

Sophomore Corey Daugherty would help the Bears build an eight point lead, 70-62, by knocking down two free throws, before Niagara would cut into the lead again, this time getting within three points, 70-67, following a jump shot by Kahlil Dukes.

Brown would seal the game using a 9-1 run capped off by a three-pointer from Obi Okolie to put the Bears up 79-68 with just 3:39 to play in the game.

Niagara would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

"We are definitely happy with the win, we put alot of work in all off season and it is nice to see the work pay off and win a game like that so, we have alot of things we need to improve upon but I thought we did just enough defensively and obviously we were very good on offense," Martin added.

Besides Spieth, Obi Okolie poured in 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Joshua Howard added 14 points to help Brown get the win.

Blackmon added 10 points and 7 assists in the game.

The Bears got a boost off the bench from Travis Fuller, who scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds
