URI Football Upsets #15 Delaware 21-19

Aaron Parker had a touchdown in URI's upset win
The University of Rhode Island football team upset #15 Delaware 21-19 on Thursday night in Delaware.

It is URI's first win over a nationally ranked team since 2011.

The Rams start the season 1-0 for the first time since 2009.

URI Upsets Delaware

Trailing 10-7 at the half, The Rams scored 14 points in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Aaron Parker got the scoring started in the quarter with a one-yard rush for a touchdown to give the Rams a 14-10 lead following the extra point by C.J. Carrick.

The touchdown capped off an 11 play, 69-yard drive for the Rams.

After a Delaware field goal cut URI’s lead to 14-13, quarterback JaJuan Lawson found Tyler Burke on a 57-yard pass to give the Rams their biggest lead of the game 21-13 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Delaware quarterback Pat Kehoe found Walker in the end zone to cut the Rams lead to 21-19 with 6:45 left to play in the game. The Blue Hens went for the two-point conversion, but missed it.

Delaware would get the ball back late in the fourth quarter and would be driving, until the Rams defense would force a fumble and recover it to seal the win.

Rhode Island's defense forced three turnovers in the game

URI returns to action on Saturday, September 8 when they host Albany.
