RI Loses 500 Jobs in March

Rhode Island lost 500 jobs in the month of March while the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5%, according to the RI Department of Labor and Training.

Rhode Island’s nonfarm payroll employment level of 498,300 was down by 500 from the revised February employment level of 498,800.

The number of employed RI residents in March was 532,700, an increase of 700 from the February number of 532,000. Since March of 2017, the number of employed RI residents was up 4,200 from March 2017.

The number of Rhode Island-based jobs increased 6,400 from March of 2017.

Unemployment Rate Decreases

The Department of Labor and Training reports that the unemployment rate dropped by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.5% in March.

Since March of 2017, the unemployment rate has increased one-tenth of a percentage point. 

The number of unemployed RI residents was 25,300 in March of 2018, down 100 from February. Over the year, the number of unemployed increased by 800.

The RI labor force totaled 558,000 in March of 2018, up 600 from February of 2018 and up 4,900 from March of 2017.

Across the country, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in March of 2018, unchanged from the previous month and down four-tenths of a percentage point dating back to March of 2017.
