Smart Benefits: One Week to Get Insured – or Pay

Under the ACA, uninsured Americans have until January 31 to enroll in qualifying health insurance through an exchange, private insurer, employer or government program – or face a tax penalty. 

For 2016, the penalty is $695 per adult and $347 per child up to a family cap of $2,500 or 2.5% of household income, whichever is greater. That’s up from $325 per adult and $162.50 per child, or 2% of household income, last year. Only those who qualify for an exception due to certain circumstances can avoid the penalty.

Last year, approximately According to the Internal Revenue Service, 7.5 million Americans paid a penalty for failing to have health insurance in 2014, according to the IRS.
