East Providence Police Officer Assaulted in Providence Near Waterfront Bars

An East Providence Police Officer was allegedly assaulted in Providence early Friday morning. 

He reportedly required stitches following an attack with a broken bottle.  

According to police sources, he was off-duty at the time.

About Incident

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Providence police responded to a report of an assault by Providence's waterfront bars on Bridge Street by the hurricane barrier. 

The suspect, who fled on foot, was apprehended by Providence Police by Wickenden Street.

The suspect is being charged with felony assault and disorderly conduct.

East Providence Police Chief William Nebus did not respond to request for comment at time of publication.
