A "balloon bridge" was constructed in Providence over the weekend where the new pedestrian bridge is slated to go over the Providence River.

The state recently awarded a nearly $17 million construction contract to Daniel O'Connell's Sons, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, who came in as the lowest bidder to build a pedestrian bridge to connect downtown to the Fox Point neighborhood.

"We are enthusiastic to see construction begin on the Pedestrian Bridge downtown, connecting neighborhoods and parks, providing for easier access to the Jewelry District, and improving the prospects for economic development in the area," said Al Dahlberg, Assistant VP Government & Community Relation at Brown University.

Concept Becoming Reality

Real estate consultant and Jewelry District advocate Sharon Steele lauded the progress towards the city making the pedestrian bridge a reality.

"This vision took shape ten years ago, but like many important ideas, it again took a grassroots effort to bring this very important connector & convergence to fruition," said Steele. "What began in 2006 as a design competition for a Pedestrian Bridge & Park, found itself with no advocate. And when something is no one's priority, it is everyone's folly.

"So when the Stadium seemed to be the new bright shiny object of those who were connected, we had a fifteen month delay," added Steele.  "But once again, a grassroots effort saved the day. 'A small group of dedicated citizens can accomplish anything & indeed, they always have & always will' - Margaret Mead was right then and her words still ring true today. And we are soon to have a Pedestrian Bridge & Park to celebrate her brilliance.
