Lincoln Town Councilor Azar Entering Race for Congress

Pamela Azar announces she is running for Congress in the first district
Lincoln Town Councilor Pamela Azar is running in the 1st Congressional District.

Congressman David Cicilline announced in February that he is stepping down from his seat to take over the position as the head of the Rhode Island Foundation and collect a salary of $650,000 for the group dedicated to supporting those in need.

“I’m running to help people and be a red-tape cutter and negotiate and mediate with the other side of the aisle,” said Azar, who is a Democrat. “I don’t like this endless war. I want to represent the people who might be cynical about voting. People know I’m not afraid to stand up for them — I represent the silent majority.”

Azar cites her experience as a single mom fighting for educational opportunities for her son, and having been “bullied into poverty,” as a driving force behind her run.

“I ended up in state aid, standing in line with everyone else,” said Azar. “I’m that person who had to call DHS (Department of Human Services) and wait for four hours. I want to help people.”

Azar said it was when the Albion Post Office was destroyed in a fire in 2017, that she worked with Cicillline’s office to get a new one built.

“I reached to his constituent services, and they helped me cut the red tape in the state to help. We had to get everyone around the table, and with his backing we got it done and built during COVID,” said Azar. “I want to be part of the solution.”
