Cedric Kuakumensah is honored before the game.The Brown Bears men's basketball team (6-12, 1-3 Ivy) defeated (6-11, 0-3 Ivy) Penn 89-83 on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Center. The win snaps a three game losing streak for Brown.
Prior to the game, Brown honored senior forward Cedric Kuakumensah for breaking the Ivy League career blocks record. Kuakumensah broke the record of Brian Gilpin who was on hand to help honor him.
The Bears trailed 56-50 with 17 minutes left in the game before going on a 12-0 run to take a 62-56 lead with 14:35 to go. The run was capped off by a Steven Spieth three-pointer, however, it was Cedric Kuakumensah who was responsible for 8 of those 12 points.
Penn would eventually take the lead back at 81-80 with 3:10 to play before Corey Daugherty would give the Bears the lead for good with a layup to put Brown up 82-81.
Steven Spieth would score four straight points for Brown to put them up 86-83 with 39 seconds left before Tavon Blackmon would seal the game at the free throw line, knocking down both shots.
The Bears get their first conference win of the season.
Brown led 46-45 at the half.
The Leaders
Brown was led by Cedric Kuakumensah who poured in 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field, including 5 of 6 from three-point land.
Tavon Blackmon followed up with 23 points and 10 assists for his first double double of the season.
Next up
Brown returns to action on Friday, February 5 when they host Cornell at the Pizzitola Center. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Corey Daugherty
Corey Daugherty contributed 9 points on 2 of 5 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line in 17 minutes of action.
Daugherty gave Brown a nice boost off the bench in this game.

Steven Spieth had a second straight big game for the Bears, pouring in 19 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
This performance comes after Spieth posted 24 points again Princeton on Friday night.
Free Throws
A key to the Brown win was that they made 10 more free throws then Penn did.
The Bears went 20 of 27 from the line while Penn was only 10 of 18.
Brown lost the points in the paint battle, lost points off turnovers and lost second chance points so free throws was key to the win.
Tavon Blackmon
Tavon Blackmon recorded a double double in the game, netting 23 points and dishing out 10 assists to go along with 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Both the points and the assists are a season high for Blackmon.
Cedric Kuakumensah
Cedric Kuakumensah was honored before the game for breaking the Ivy League's career blocks record. Kuakumensah broke the record of Dartmouth's Brian Gilpin (black jacket next to Kuakumensah) who was in attendance to honor him.
Kuakumensah finished the game with a team leading 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field and five of six from three-point land.
Kuakumensah scored 11 of the teams first 16 points in the game.
Kuakumensah also blocked 5 shots and had 8 rebounds in the game.
