Brown to Honor Kuakumensah for Ivy League Blocks Record Prior to Tonight's Game

Cedric Kuakumensah
Brown basketball senior Cedric Kuakumensah will be honored prior to tonight's game against Penn at the Pizzitola Center for breaking the Ivy League career shot blocks record.

Kuakumensah broke the previous record of 252 blocks held by Dartmouth's Brian Gilpin who set the mark from 1993-1997. Gilpin will be in the building to honor Kuakumensah.

"It just signifies the impact that Cedric has has on our program and what a great player he has been for us. He's the first player in Ivy League history to score 1,000 points, have 800 career rebounds and 200 career blocks," said Brown head coach Mike Martin.

Kuakumensah reached the 1,000 point plateau two games ago against Yale and currently sits at 274 career blocked shots, with 39 so far this season.

"You think about all the different ways he has impacted the program, obviously it goes far beyond the numbers, obviously his numbers stand out but it goes beyond that. I'm happy for him but I know the most important thing to him is us playing well and us winning, I know that is what is on his mind and I'm confident he will come ready to play well," Martin added.

Kuakumensah has blocked 7 shots, a career high, in two games this season and has recorded at least 4 blocks in 5 games this season for the Bears.

Kuakumensah's Season-by-Season Breakdown of Blocked shots is as follows:

  • Freshman season - 66 blocked shots
  • Sophomore Season - 93 blocked shots
  • Junior season - 76 blocked shots
  • Senior season - 39 blocked shots (so far)

Game time is set for 8 p.m. and the ceremony will take place just before tip off.

The Game: Brown vs. Penn

Brown and Penn will be meeting for the 127th time in history with Penn holding a 101-25 series advantage, however, the Bears have won the last four games.

Brown comes into the game with a record of 5-12 overall and 0-3 in conference, coming off a loss to Princeton on Friday night. Penn enters the contest with a record of 6-10 overall and 0-2 in the Ivy League after a Friday night loss to Yale.

"They are a scrappy team, they are very well coached, they have a front court player in Darien Nelson-Henry who is a load inside and can really score the ball in a variety of ways. They share the ball extremely well, they space the floor. So they will test us a lot, they will shoot a lot of three-pointers, we have to be ready to guard them at the three-point line  but we also have to be ready to play good post defense," Martin said about the matchup with Penn.

This is the Bears first back-to-back of the season, meaning Brown needs to put the loss to Princeton behind them quickly.

"We have to forget about this and be ready to absorb and digest the Penn scouting report and be ready to go on Saturday when we show up for film," said Martin.

Brown will look to earn their 26th win all-time  against penn and more importantly look to snap a three game losing streak and record their first conference win of the season on Cedric Kuakumensah's big night.
