Brown's Cambridge Ranked Among Top Mid-Major NBA Prospects to Watch in 2019

Desmond Cambridge is listed as one of the top mid-major prospects to watch in 2019
Brown University basketball star Desmond Cambridge is ranked as one of the top mid-major NBA prospects to watch in 2019.

According to The Stepien, Cambridge is the second best mid-major prospect to watch in 2019 out of ten ranked players.

“Cambridge is the rare player who can pull off a 360 dunk on one play and then nail a 3 running off a screen on the next. Although he is quite trigger-happy, Cambridge can simply put the ball in the hoop, and his package of tools suggests that he could do the same at the NBA level. Brown used him first and foremost as a 3-point shooting threat last season, running him off countless screens to get him open and encouraging him to shoot off movement. For a player who took so many difficult attempts, Cambridge performed valiantly, nailing 33.5 percent of his 3s as a freshman. He is also comfortable pulling up to take and hit tough shots in the mid-range and flashes impressive athleticism and strength as a finisher around the bucket. Cambridge forces too many bad shots and hasn’t shown much as a creator for others, so improving his court awareness and discipline should be his main focus for this offseason. Showing that he can get to the rim more consistently off a live dribble is also a point of improvement,” writes The Stepien.

The Stepien adds, “On defense, Cambridge is a playmaker more than anything else, using his impressive length, bounce, and energy to generate bocks and steals. He lacks discipline and loses focus too often, so reeling in some of his bad decisions is something to work on, just as it is on offense. It’s hard to project him defending bigger NBA wings at 6-foot-4 with his relatively skinny frame, but he’s quick enough to guard 1s and has the length to guard many 2s. Because of his size, Cambridge will need to focus on improving his playmaking and becoming more of a combo guard next season. Players who combine his off-movement shooting acumen and eye-popping athleticism are rare to find outside the high-major ranks, so NBA teams should have their eyes on Cambridge this upcoming season. If he makes big strides in terms of discipline and as a decision-maker, he could really speed up his NBA timeline.”

Cambridge at Brown

In his freshman season at Brown, Cambridge was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year after averaging 17.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

He set a Brown freshman scoring record with 468 points, passing the previous mark of 460 points set by Brown's all-time leading scorer Earl Hunt in 2000.

His 2.5 threes per game were fifth in the Ivy League, while his 27 blocked shots ranked sixth.

Cambridge reached double figures in scoring in 24 of Brown's 27 games and scored at least 20 points eight times, including a career-high 33 points against Marist.

He posted his first career double-double at Columbia with 26 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
