The Boston Red Sox have fired President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The move took place late Sunday night shortly after the Red Sox lost to the Yankees 10-5 at Fenway Park.

“This is a guy that gave me a chance to come here and be a big-league manager. It’s one of those that it caught me. They just told me. So I’m not ready to talk about it,” said manager Alex Cora in his post-game press conference.

Boston is eight games back of the second wild-card spot in the American League and 17 1/2 behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.

According to ESPN, four senior Red Sox staff will share duties for the remainder of the season.

Dombrowski in Boston

Dombrowski joined the Red Sox in August of 2015 and had a contract that ran through 2020.

During his time in Boston, he signed starting pitcher David Price, traded for Chris Sale and then signed him to an extension this past offseason, and also signed designated hitter J.D. Martinez.

He also named Cora manager and traded for closer Craig Kimbrel and Nathan Eovaldi.

In 2018, the Red Sox won a team record 108 games and the World Series, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games.

However, this season, the Red Sox are just 76-67 and in third place in the AL East with a payroll of $200 million.
