Patriots Defense Shuts Down Falcons, Cruise to 23-7 Win in Super Bowl Rematch

Patriots defense shuts down Falcons
The New England Patriots defense shut out the Atlanta Falcons for just over three and a half quarters and the Patriots cruised to a 23-7 win in a rematch of last season's Super Bowl on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium.

The defense allowed reigning NFL MVP Matt Ryan just 233 yards passing and one touchdown while recording two sacks. They held Atlanta scoreless until there was 4:07 left in the fourth quarter.

Coming into the game, the Patriots defense had given up at least 300 yards passing in every game this season.

The defense made a critical stop on fourth and goal from their own one-yard line to keep the Falcons scoreless in the third quarter.

The Patriots improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 3-3.

Patriots Cruise to Win

After a scoreless first quarter, the Patriots got on the board in the second when Tom Brady connected with Brandin Cooks on a modified end around play.

Cooks took the ball from the backfield and ran 11 yards behind Rob Gronkowski into the end zone to put the Patriots up 7-0 following an extra point by Stephen Gostkowski.

After Gostkowski kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Patriots a 10-0 lead, Brady connected with James White on a two-yard pass into the end zone just before the half to extend New England’s lead to 17-0 after a Gostkowski extra point.

The touchdown was White's first since his game winning touchdown in the Super Bowl last season.

Gostkowski added two field goals in the second half to put the Patriots up 23-0 in the fourth quarter.

Atlanta would get on the board with just over four minutes to play in the game on a touchdown catch by Julio Jones, but the Patriots would cruise to the win.
