PC Basketball Picked to Finish Tied for 4th in Big East Preseason Poll

The Providence College men’s basketball team was picked to finish in a tie for fourth in the Big East Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Thursday.

Last season, the Friars finished 18-16 overall and 7-11 in the Big East. PC went on to lose to Villanova in the second round of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

After missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years, Providence was selected to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost a home game to Arkansas 84-72.

In 2019-2020 the Friars return all five starters, including Alpha Diallo, David Duke, AJ Reeves, and Nate Watson.

They also return Emmitt Holt and add guard Luwane Pipkins, who transferred in from UMass.

The Poll

The Friars were projected to finish in a fourth-place tie with Marquette University, with each school receiving 50 points.

Seton Hall was picked to finish first with 77 points, while Villanova was picked to finish second with 76 points.

Xavier rounds out the top three.

At the bottom of the league, Georgetown, Creighton, Butler, St. John’s and Depaul round out spots six through ten. 

Diallo Named Preseason All-Big East First Team

Diallo was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big East First Team.

Last season, Diallo averaged 16 points and 8.1 rebounds for the Friars. His eight rebounds ranked second in the Big East.

For his career, Diallo has recorded 1,155 points in 99 games (11.7 ppg).  

He became the 50th player in Friar history to score 1,000 or more career points.  

Diallo ranks 33rd all-time in scoring at Providence.

Season Opener

The Friars get set to open the regular season on Tuesday, November 5 when they host Sacred Heart at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
