Meet the Candidates: Rep. David Coughlin

Rep. Coughlin
Meet the candidates this election year. GoLocal is featuring all the candidates for General Assembly, those running for Mayor in cities across the state, and the Congressional candidates. This feature allows each candidate the opportunity to express their views on the issues. Meet Representative David Coughlin. He is running for re-election in House District 60.

1. What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

The biggest issue for District 60 and Rhode Island voters is to make sure our economy is on the right track and not to go backwards on the progress we have made since the devastating Great Recession.  Pawtucket in particular has seen amazing strides toward a much stronger economy, as evidenced with our recent bond rating upgrade, but people are still feeling the effects of a depressed economy.  That is why I have been fighting hard to eliminate the burdensome and unfair car tax and why I am a staunch supporter of the proposed new commuter rail station that will bring the development Pawtucket needs to prosper in the future.

2. What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

The three ways to improve our economy in Rhode Island is to invest in education, to invest in our small businesses, and to invest in our infrastructure.  We need to invest in education so that our residents are properly trained for the jobs of the 21st century.  We need to invest in our small businesses because they truly are the backbone of our state and we can do this by getting rid of burdensome regulations and taxes that stifle their growth.  And regarding our infrastructure, everyone in Rhode Island knows that our roads and bridges are crumbling beneath us and without proper and adequate infrastructure, no one is going to invest in our state.

3. What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenge Rhode Island continues to face is improving our economy that is still recovering from the Great Recession.  Too many people in Rhode Island are working as hard as they can but are still struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis.  If we want to have a healthy and vibrant economy, first and foremost, it is these people who need to have money in their pockets so they can provide for themselves, their families, and have enough money left over so that they can shop at our local small businesses.

4. Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

I am running for reelection because although Pawtucket has made great strides over the past few years, there is still so much more work to be done for our taxpayers.  Eliminating the car tax, making sure our schools have enough money, ensuring the train station gets build, keeping the PawSox in Pawtucket, fixing our roads and bridges, and making the sure the economic progress Pawtucket has made continues into the future are all issues that I care deeply about and I vow to continue to fight for if re-elected.

Who is your inspiration?

My four children are my inspiration.  I want to leave them a world where they have the opportunity to provide for their own families and live their lives comfortably into the future.
