Brown's Gainey Named Ivy League Co-Defensive Player of Year, Choh Makes 2nd Team All-Ivy

Brown basketball sophomore Jaylan Gainey has been named Ivy League Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while junior Tamenang Choh made the All-Ivy Second Team, the league announced on Wednesday.

Gainey and Choh helped Brown to a 15-12 overall record, including 8-6 in the Ivy League.

The Bears finished fourth in the conference, but did not qualify for the Ivy League tournament due to tiebreakers.

As GoLocalProv reported, the Ivy League Tournament has since been canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

Gainey This Season

Gainey is the second consecutive Brown player, and third overall, to be named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, joining Obi Okolie and Cedric Kuakumensah.

He shares the award with Yale's Paul Atkinson. 

Gainey led the Ivy League and ranked 29thnationally with 2.1 blocked shots per game, finishing with 54 blocks, sixth most in Brown basketball history. 

Gainey tied the Brown school record with seven blocked shots against Merrimack.

He recorded five blocked shots in Ivy action against Yale, and four blocks against Harvard and Princeton. 

On the season, Gainey shot 69% from the field and averaged 5.1 rebounds per game, including a career-high 12 rebounds against Penn and Columbia.

Choh This Season

Choh was named Second Team All-Ivy for the second straight season after averaging 13.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the Bears.

He posted eight double-doubles throughout the season, posting 20 points and 12 rebounds against both Penn and Bryant.

Choh’s 8.1 rebounds per game were third-best in the conference.
