The #25 URI Rams fell 56-49 to the UConn Huskies on Saturday afternoon in Connecticut.

The loss drops Rhode Island to 2-1 on the season.

URI’s Rally Falls Short

Trailing 42-28 at the half, the Rams opened the second half with back-to-back touchdowns to tie the game at 42 midway through the third quarter.

With 55 seconds left in the third, UConn’s David Pindell ran six yards into the end zone to put the Huskies back in the lead, 49-42 with one quarter to play.

The Huskies would maintain their lead for most of the quarter before URI’s Naim Jones broke a 14-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 49 following an extra point by C.J. Carrick.

With the game tied at 49, the Huskies went on a nine play, 69-yard drive ending in with a 22-yard rushing touchdown by Kevin Mensah to take a 56-49 lead with one minute to go.

The Rams had one more possession and advanced the ball to the UConn 16 yard line, but Lawson was sacked for a nine-yard loss ending the game.

Lawson finished the game completing 23 of 34 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns.

URI returns to action on Friday, September 28 when they visit Harvard.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
