URI Men's Basketball Picked 2nd in A-10 Preseason Poll

The URI men's basketball team is picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 in the 2016-17 A-10 preseason rankings announced on Tuesday during A-10 Media Day at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

The Rams were picked to finish behind the Dayton Flyers who tallied 16 first place votes. This is the second straight season and the third time in program history that the Rams were picked as high as second.

The Rams were ranked 20th in the country in an ESPN preseason poll released in early October. 

2016-17 A10 Preseason Poll 

After Dayton and URI, VCU was picked to finish third and Davidson was picked to finish fourth and 2015-16 regular season co-champion St. Bonaventure was picked to fifth.  

Saint Louis was picked to finish last in the conference.

Matthews and Martin Earn preseason honors 

Guard E.C. Matthews and forward Hassan Martin were selected to the Preseason Second Team All-Conference, and Martin was also selected to the Preseason All-Defensive team. 

Matthews is coming off a torn ACL in 2015-16, while Martin was named the 2015-16 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. 

2016-17 URI Basketball 

In 2015-16, the Rams went 17-15 overall and 9-9 in the A-10 after losing star guard E.C. Matthews in the first game of the season and sitting A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Hassan Martin for the final four games of the season with knee tendonitis.

The Rams will return E.C. Matthews, Hassan Martin, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Kuran Iverson while transfer Stanford Robinson will be eligible to play.

URI Begins their season on November 11 when they host Dartmouth at the Ryan Center.
