Hightower suffered the injury during the final minutes of the third quarter in the Patriots Sunday night victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Hightower will now have missed 22 of 64 games over the last four seasons.

Hightower With the Patriots

Hightower signed a 4-year deal worth $43.5 million with the Patriots in the offseason after testing the free agent market.

This season, Hightower has played in five games, recording two sacks and 12 tackles. He missed two games earlier in the season with a knee injury.

This year’s injury comes after Hightower was limited most of the last season with knee and shoulder injuries.

Replacing Hightower

Filling in for Hightower will likely fall to a combination of four players.

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy will have most of the responsibility when it comes to communication and is already a three-down player, meaning he won’t have to adjust to increased playing time.

He also has experience as an edge rusher.

Elandon Roberts and Shea McClellin could also chip in at that position. McClellin is on injured reserve, but started practicing last week and is eligible to return during the week 9 bye.

The fourth option is David Harris, who has seen limited action so far this season after coming over from the New York Jets.

Last week against the Falcons he played a season-high 19 snaps.
