Special Teams Units Helps Patriots Cruise Past Broncos 41-16

The New England Patriots special teams unit helped account for 17 points as the Patriots cruised past the Denver Broncos 41-16 on Sunday Night Football. 

The win gives Patriots head coach Bill Belichick his 270th career victory, tying him for third-most all-time with Tom Landry.

The Patriots improve to 7-2 on the season and in first place in the AFC East. Denver drops to 3-6 overall and has lost five straight games. 

Special Teams Leads the Way

The Patriots special teams units got the Patriots offense going in the opening minutes of the first quarter.

After the Patriots went three and out on their opening drive, Ryan Allen’s punt was fumbled by Denver’s Isaiah McKenzie and recovered by New England’s Jacob Hollister at the Denver 27 yard line.

Two plays later, Tom Brady found Rex Burkhead for a 14-yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead following an extra point.

After Denver got on the board with a field goal to make it 7-3, Dion Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 14-3 lead after an extra point.

The Broncos and Patriots exchanged field goals to give the Patriots a 17-6 lead before special teams came through again.

On a fourth and nine from the Denver 41 yard line, Denver punter Riley Dixon’s punt was blocked by Burkhead. Denver recovered the punt, but the Patriots would take over possession due to the turnover on downs.

Five plays later, the Patriots would add a 28-yard field goal to take a 20-6 lead.

Patriots Offense Does Rest

After Denver added a field goal to make it 20-9, Brady found tight end Dwayne Allen in the end zone with 25 seconds left in the half to put the Patriots up 27-9 after an extra point.

The catch was Allen’s first of the season.

The Broncos would cut the Patriots lead to 27-16 following a touchdown catch by Demaryius Thomas, but New England would respond with a touchdown of their own.

This one in the form of an eight-yard touchdown run by Lewis to put the Patriots up 34-16 following an extra point.

The Patriots would add another touchdown in the fourth quarter when Brady found James White on a six-yard pass to put New England up 41-16 following an extra point.

Brady finished the game completing 25 of 34 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots would cruise to the win.

The Patriots return to action on Sunday, November 19 when they take on the Oakland Raiders in Mexico City.
