PC Basketball Blows 17 Point 2nd Half Lead, Fall 66-65 to Long Beach State

PC can't hold a 17 point second half lead.
The Providence College Friars men’s basketball team blew a 17 point second-half lead and fell to 66-65 to the Long Beach State 49ers on Thanksgiving Day in the Wooden Legacy Tournament in Anaheim, California.

“We did not execute down the stretch. Give Long Beach credit, they got down, but did not quit. The officials did not cost us the game. The upsetting part for me was the turnovers,” said PC head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

PC has now lost three of their last five games and drop to 4-3 on the year.

Long Beach improves to 3-4 overall.

PC Can’t Hold 17 Point Lead

After leading 37-28 at the half, the Friars extended their lead to 17 points, 47-30, with 17:28 to play in the game on a three from Luwane Pipkins.

Long Beach State would get within five, 50-45, with 11:48 to play in the half, before Providence would score seven straight points to take a 12 point lead, 57-45, on a layup by Nate Watson with ten minutes to play.

Providence would lead by ten, 61-51, with seven minutes left before Long Beach would make their run.

Long Beach cut the PC lead to one, 64-63, with 52 seconds left before Pipkins got a free throw to go with 49 seconds left to put Providence up 65-63.

After both teams traded turnovers and Alpha Diallo missed a free throw, Long Beach had the ball with 15 seconds to play in the game and trailing by two.

In the final seconds, Long Beach’s Michael Carter III launched a three from the elbow. The three missed the mark, but Carter was fouled by Emmitt Holt on the play.

Carter went to the line and knocked down all three free throws to give the 49ers a 66-65 lead with three seconds left.

In PC’s final chance, David Duke caught the inbounds pass just before half court and raced down the lane, but his runner with time expiring would not go.

The 49ers closed the game on a 15-4 run to steal the win.

The Friars turned the ball over 21 times in the game, led by Duke who had five turnovers and Diallo who had four turnovers.

Providence shot 41% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.

Pipkins led the Friars with 12 points, while Diallo followed up with 11.

Next Up

The Friars return to action on Friday, November 29 when they take on the College of Charleston in the consolation game.
