PC Basketball Faces Memphis on Friday in Emerald Coast Classic

Kyron Cartwright
The Providence College Friars men’s basketball team are in Destin, Florida to face Memphis in the Emerald Coast Classic on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 9:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on the CBS Sports Network.

“We are excited to head down to Destin, Florida. Our next opponent will be Memphis, it will be a totally different level, athleticism, toughness, so we are going to have our hands full,” said Providence head coach Ed Cooley following the Friars win over St. Francis.

The Friars enter the game with a record of 3-1 overall, while Memphis comes in undefeated at 3-0.

This is PC’s first game against Memphis since 2005.

Memphis

The Tigers are coming off of wins against Texas Rio Grande Valley, Milwaukee, and Savannah State.  They are led by sophomore guard Dedric Lawson, who averages 21 points per game and was selected as the AAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year.

PC Basketball - Two Things to Watch

Junior guard Kyron Cartwright leads the entire NCAA in assists, averaging 9.3 per game through four games this season.

However, the Friars need him to score more as he is only averaging 7.3 points per game and has only taken 24 shots and made 11 of them the entire season.

“I think he needs to be a little more selfish for us to be successful, and I don’t mean selfish in a negative way, some of the shots he has turned down is actually hurting us,” said Cooley.

Look for Cartwright to be more aggressive looking for his shot in this game on a neutral court.

The Freshmen

The last game the Friars played away from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center was at Ohio St. and in that game, the freshmen were not much of a factor, especially in the second half.

Following the game against Grambling, Cooley was asked what he has learned about his freshmen to this point.

Cooley said, “How far they have to go on just preparation, emotion, knowledge, how to be on a college basketball court, we have a long way to go.”

In PC’s last game, Kalif Young had a bit of a coming out party, making his first start in place of Emmitt Holt and scoring 16 points, but that was at home.

While this is not a true road game, if the game is close in the second half, the minutes of the freshmen will be something to watch.

Emerald Coast Classic

The Emerald Coast Classic is a four-game tournament that has seen PC beat Grambling and St. Francis Brooklyn and now travel to Destin, Florida where they will play Memphis on November 25 and either Iowa or Virginia on the 26.
