"We brought Emmitt here to be a stud, that's his job. We brought Emmitt here to be a focal point and to score in a variety of ways. Emmitt has been one of our more consistent players in the preseason and the carry over definitely showed," said Providence head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

Holt's points came on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and 1 of 4 from beyond the arc.

"I think my teammates did a good job of getting me the ball when I was open, I was able to finish the plays, but you got to give the credit to my teammates," Holt said in his press conference after the game.

The Friars open the season with a 1-0 record, while Vermont drops to 1-1 on the season.

"I'm very very proud of the group, I thought it was a hard fought win. I thought we played a very good basketball team, an experienced team, a very good offensive team. I think it is a credit to our players staying dialed into the scouting report," said Cooley after the game.

PC has now won 14 of their last 15 season openers, with their only loss coming in 2008-09.

Second Half Run Leads to Win

Leading by six at the half, the Friars opened the second half on a 10-4 run, capped off by a steal by Kyron Cartwright and three-pointer by Rodney Bullock right in front of the Friars bench to give PC their 12 point lead back, 44-32, early in the second half.

The Catamounts tried to climb back into the game, getting as close as eight points before the Friars would extend the lead back to 12, following a Cartwright jump shot.

PC's lead would fluctuate between 10 and 12 points for about five minutes before going on a 9-2 run capped off by a Bullock three to give the Friars a 68-50 lead with six minutes to play in the game.

Providence would extend their lead to as much as 25 points in the final minute before cruising to a 22 point win.

Vermont Climbs Back into the Game

The Friars built up as much as a 12 point lead in the first half with 5:24 left before Vermont was able to cut into the lead, getting as close as four points, 32-28, before two free throws by freshman Alpha Diallo gave PC their 34-28 half time lead.

Vermont was able to get back into the game when PC went with a young lineup, consisting of Maliek White, Diallo and Kalif Young. The three freshmen had trouble against Vermont's 1-3-1 zone, which forced the Friars into bad shots and poor ball movement.

"I thought we went into a lull in the first half when we had all three freshmen in at the same time. We wanted to see what that looked like as a coaching staff," said Cooley after the game.

Cooley substituted Lindsey, Cartwright and Fazekas back into the lineup and the Friars would close the half with the lead.
