Ben Bentil is the most recent Friar to leave the program.
The Providence College Friars men's basketball team has lost 7 players who had remaining eligibility for the upcoming 2016-17 season, including losing 5 players just in this offseason.

Two of those players are Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil who are both entering June's NBA Draft. Dunn is projected as a top 6 pick by just about everyone while Bentil is projected anywhere from late first round to second round. Dunn and Bentil had one and two seasons of eligibility remaining respectively.

“We appreciate everything that Kris and Ben have done for us the last few years. When we came to Providence our goal was to recruit high level players that would allow us to compete for the BIG EAST title and play in the NCAA Tournament. Kris and Ben have helped us reach those goals. We wish them all the best. I believe each of them will have long and productive careers in the NBA," said PC Head Coach Ed Cooley.

In program history, providence has had 41 players drafted in the NBA, the most recent being Ricky Ledo. However, the Friars have never had two players selected in the first round and have not had two players selected in the same NBA Draft since 1997 when Austin Croshere and God Shammgod were picked.

Chukwu Starts Things Off

The exodus from the Providence College basketball program started prior to the 2015-16 season in which 7'2" center Paschal Chukwu left the team for Syracuse.  where he sat not he bench last season as part of the NCAA transfer rules.

"I think everyone was surprised at him leaving, but 750 kids transfer every year. Some kids just are looking for something different and I'm not sure what he was looking for,but no hard feelings, we wish him the best," Ed Cooley told GoLocal.

Friars radio analyst Joe Hassett added "I think it is one of the dumbest decisions I have ever seen."

Chukwu sat out this season for the Orange due to NCAA transfer rules.

On the Flip Side

Kalif Young
While the number of players leaving the program can be alarming, PC has 5 players coming in for the 2016-17 season including a couple of highly touted freshman like Maliek White, Alpha Diallo and Kalif Young, the most recent commit.

“We are looking forward to having Kalif join our family next season. He brings a lot of size, strength and enthusiasm to the court. In addition, we are excited to add this high character and very motivated young man to our program," Cooley said of the 6'9" forward from Canada.

Providence will also get some veteran presence in the form of Isaiah Jackson who sat out last season after transferring from George Mason. Also, Emmitt Holt, a former Indiana Hoosier, has transferred in and will be eligible immediately.

As the offseason rolls on, Ed Cooley and the Friars have two scholarships available.
