PC Basketball Falls 63-52 to #7 Virginia in Emerald Coast Classic Championship

The Providence College Friars men’s basketball team came up short in their bid to win the Emerald Coast Classic Championship, falling to #7 Virginia 63-52 on Saturday night in Destin, Florida. 

The Friars move to 4-2 on the season and finish the tournament with a 3-1 record. 

Friars Can’t Get Over Hump

Trailing by 14 to start the second half, Providence opened the second half with a 9-0 run capped off by two free throws from Rodney Bullock to cut their deficit to just five points with 17:30 left to play. 

The Friars then had two chances to get within three points but were not able to convert as Kyron Cartwright and Jalen Lindsey both missed layups. 

On Virginia’s possession following Lindsey’s missed layup, London Perrantes hit a three to push the Cavaliers lead back to eight, 37-29, with 15:16 left to play. 

Providence would again cut their deficit to five, 41-36, after Lindsey hit a three with 11:35 to play, but again Virginia would pull away, using a quick 9-3 run to go up 50-39 with 8:21 to go in the game following a dunk by Darius Thompson. 

The Friars would get no closer than eight the rest of the way. 

Virginia Takes Control

After the opening minutes of the game saw six lead changes, Virginia was able to take control of the game. 

Leading 16-14 with 11:09 to go, the Cavaliers went on a 12-2 run to take a 28-16 lead with 4:25 left in the half. 

They would take a 34-20 lead into the half. 

The Leaders 

The Friars were led by Lindsey, who poured in 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. 

Bullock followed up with 16 points, but only shot 3 of 13 from the field. 

Next up 

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, November 30 when they host New Hampshire at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. 

Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
