“They are going to push the pace, it will be a high pace game. We have played them in the past and have had some success so I am pretty sure they are going to be dialed. We are going to have to deal with their transition offense, their press, they are going to try and come after us a little bit,” said Providence head coach Ed Cooley.

The Friars have beaten UMass each of the last two seasons, winning at UMass just before Christmas last season.

The Minutemen come in off of a 72-48 win for Pacific and are 6-2 on the year. They also have wins over Harvard, Holy Cross and Temple.

The Minutemen are led by forward Donte Clark, who averages 15 points and five rebounds per game. Guard Dejon Jarreau averages five assists per game.

Ball Movement

With the Minutemen expected to apply pressure to the Friars, ball movement will be key.

In PC’s last game against Brown, the Friars tallied 24 assists on 37 made baskets. Against the URI, PC had 11 assists on 21 made baskets.

“It’s a credit to the players liking each other, laughing at each other, camaraderie. We have a long way to go but in a short period of time I feel our team is getting a little bit better  at some of the small things, in the gaps, ball pressure, and transition basketball, “ Cooley said.

Look to see how the Friars move the ball under pressure.

Ryan Fazekas

You may have noticed that in the last two games sharpshooter Ryan Fazekas has been taken out of the starting lineup, replaced by Isaiah Jackson.

Fazekas has taken eight shots total in PC’s last four games and made four of them. He is 16 of 39 on the season, with 12 makes from beyond the arc.

“We need him to shoot the ball, I think he is a very good player but we need him to be a little more confident shooting the ball. We feel he is one of our better shooters and can spread the floor, but if he’s not comfortable shooting, don’t shoot it, but we are going to encourage him to shoot,” Cooley said.

In four of PC’s first five games, Fazes played 24, 23, 27 and 20 minutes respectively. In the Friars last four games, his minutes have dropped off, playing 16, 18, 17 and 13 minutes respectively.

With conference play quickly approaching (less than a month to be exact), it is critical that Fazekas find his confidence. PC can only hope it starts against UMass.
