URI Men's Basketball Ranked #20 in Country in ESPN Preseason Poll

E.C. Matthews returns this season.
URI men's Basketball is ranked 20th in the country in ESPN's "No Longer Way Too Early Top 25," released on Thursday.

"After a season long injury recovery, E.C. Matthews is back. He was the primary piece of Rhode Island's 23-10 2014-15 season, when they finished with a top 15 adjusted efficiency defense. That's the top reason to be excited about Dan Hurley's team, but there are others, namely the continuity of the starting lineup," said ESPN about the Rams.

URI is ranked ahead of Connecticut and Maryland at 21 and 22, and behind Creighton and West Virginia at 18 and 19 respectively. ESPN ranks Duke as the number one team in the country.

While these are not the official preseason rankings, it could be a sign of things to come.

URI and the National Rankings

It has been some time since URI has seen the national polls. The last time URI was nationally ranked was in the AP Poll in 2007-2008 where they ranked 22nd in the country.

The highest they have ever ranked in program history came in 1997-98 when they ranked 20 in the AP Poll. That season they made the NCAA Tournament and lost in the regional final.

2016-17 URI Basketball

In 2015-16, the Rams went 17-15 overall and 9-9 in the A-10 after losing star guard E.C. Matthews in the first game of the season and sitting A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Hassan Martin for the final four games of the season with knee tendonitis.

In 2016-17, URI will one of the favorites to win the A-10 Conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams will return E.C. Matthews, Hassan Martin, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Kuran Iverson while transfer Stanford Robinson will be eligible to play.

URI Begins their season on November 11 when they host Dartmouth at the Ryan Center.
