Meet the Candidates: Helder Cunha

Helder Cunha
Meet the candidates this election year. GoLocal is featuring all the candidates for General Assembly, those running for Mayor in cities across the state, and the Congressional candidates. This feature allows each candidate the opportunity to express their views on the issues. Meet Representative Helder Cunha. He is running for House District 64.

1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

Our state’s economy. Economic growth is key to addressing many of the challenges our state is faced with: Getting our fiscal house in order, preventing tax increases, creating good-paying jobs, making sure our kids attend well-funded and quality schools, as well as attracting and keeping residents who want to raise their families here. Here in East Providence, high sewer and water bills are one of the main issues facing our residents. If elected, these will be my priorities to address from day one of the job.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Simply put, we need to start placing welcome mats instead of hoops for small businesses. One critical first step in moving the needle on our business climate is improving our dialogue with the business community. We need to establish an ongoing relationship to hear their concerns and how to go about revitalizing our state’s economy. We need to provide businesses and entrepreneurs with stability and confidence when it comes to state policy.  From reviewing tax and regulatory policies, to speeding up permit processes, everything should be on the table.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Our biggest challenge has been getting our economy back on track. Rhode Island has lagged the rest of the county in recovering from the Great Recession. Job creation remains stagnant when compared to other states and we have consistently ranked near dead last in favorable business climate. That needs to change if we want to make our state a better place to live, to fix our schools, and to address our state’s projected budget shortfalls.

4.  Why are you running for office?

Many of the concerns that residents have shared with me throughout my campaign is why I am running for State Representative District 64. We must focus on making it easier to create and run small businesses here to create good paying jobs in our state. We must maintain the integrity and quality of our public schools, and we must put an end to higher sewer bills that have cost residents and business enormously, especially for those living on fixed incomes. During my time as a City Councilman, I have increased our City’s bond rating, stabilizing the City’s credit and creating a budget surplus, but the work is just beginning. These are the challenges we face as a community. This is why I’m running.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My parents. wife, and kids – Arianna, Jocelyn, and Roman. They are always there for me and inspire me every day.
