Porcello Gives up Grand Slam as Red Sox Fall 10-5 to Tampa

Rick Porcello gave up a grand slam in the 3rd inning
Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello gave up a grand slam in the third inning and the Boston Red Sox could not recover as they fell 10-5 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night at Fenway Park. 

Porcello gave up four home runs in total on the night as Boston falls to 5-5 on the season.

The Rays got the scoring started in the second inning when Shane Peterson hit a home run that stayed just inside the Pesky Pole in right field to give the Rays a 2-0 lead. Peterson was playing his first MLB game since 2015. 

In the very next inning, Tampa’s  Logan Morrison hit a grand slam to deep right field to put the Rays up 6-0. 

Tampa’s Brad Miller and Steven Souza Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to chase Porcello from the game. 

The Red Sox would never threaten, despite three runs in the ninth inning and 14 hits in the game. 

Series Continues 

The Red Sox and Rays will play game two of the series on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 4:05 p.m. 

The Rays will have Jake Odorizzi on the mound while the Red Sox will have Chris Sale on the mound.
