Sale Strikes Out 12 as Red Sox Edge Rays 2-1

Chris Sale recorded 12 strikeouts and Sandy Leon recorded the game winning RBI as the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 at Fenway Park on Saturday. 

Sale has given up just three runs in 21 2/3 innings pitched so far with the Red Sox, who have only scored a total of three runs in his starts.

With the game tied at 1 in the 7th inning, Sandy Leon hit a bat breaking bases loaded ground out to score the winning run. Boston loaded the bases on two singles and a walk against Tampa’s Tommy Hunter. 

The Red Sox handed the ball to Matt Barnes in the 8th inning and despite walking two batters, Barnes got out of the inning. 

Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs in the 9th to earn his fourth save of the season. 

Series Continues 

The Red Sox and Rays will continue their series on Sunday when Tampa’s Alex Cobb will face Boston’s Drew Pomeranz. 

First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m.
