Smart Benefits: Exchange Enrollment Figures In

Earlier this month, the US Department of Health and Human Services published a final report on health insurance marketplace enrollment during the latest open enrollment period. According to the report, marketplaces nationwide signed up 4.9 million new customers for 2016 coverage. In total, 12.7 million people signed up or automatically renewed their plans for 2016 coverage. 

In Rhode Island, one of 13 states using its own marketplace platform, data in the report includes the following: 

•    There were a total of 64,987 completed applications for 2016 coverage, with 117,122 total individuals applying for 2016 coverage in completed applications 
•    49,180 were eligible to enroll in a marketplace plan; 39,724 were eligible to enroll in a marketplace plan with financial assistance 
•    34,670 individuals made 2016 plan selections through the marketplaces between November 1, 2015 – January 31, 2016
•    22% were new customers and 78% were reenrollees (6% were active reenrollees and 62% were automatic reenrollees)
•    54% of those who made selections were female and 46% were male
•    Those in the age group 55-64 represented the greatest percentage – 27% -- of those making plan selections
