Smart Benefits: OSHA Steps Towards Workplace Safety

Every year, about two million American workers are victims of workplace violence, according to OSHA. With several recent, highly-publicized workplace violence tragedies, now’s a good time to make sure your business has a plan in place to identify potential incidents and reduce the risk of harm to employees. To help, OSHA’s Fact Sheet on workplace violence lists several steps employers can take, including:
  • Establish a zero-tolerance policy toward workplace violence against or by employees.
  • Develop a workplace violence prevention program and incorporate it into an employee handbook or other worksite manual. Ensure all employees know it and understand that all claims of violence will be investigated.
  • Provide safety education for employees so workers understand what conduct is unacceptable, what to do if workplace violence occurs and how to protect themselves.
  • Secure the workplace with video surveillance, extra lighting, alarms, guard, electronic keys and badges.
  • Instruct employees not to enter areas where they feel unsafe or establish a buddy system or escort service for those in potentially dangerous situations.
  • Provide field staff with cell phones and alarms and make sure they provide updates on their location throughout the day.
  • Limit the amount of cash on site with the use of drop safes and maintain only a minimal amount of cash in registers at night.
