Cheryl Simmons: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

The oft-quoted Margaret Mead may have said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has,” but little did she know its impact in the world of social media, listservs, and community organizing.

Resident Cheryl Simmons on the East Side of Providence started a crime watch listserve, serving as an intermediary between the police and the District 9 command staff in particular, and reporting the city’s crime stats as recorded on crimereports.com.

The group however has become much more over the recent year, serving as a forum for residents to share information about crime and crime prevention, and also as a catalyst for community action. From organizing around such issues as development on Blackstone Boulevard (which recently resulted in the reversal of the city’s proposal for speed bumps) to addressing breaking-and-enterings and security issues, the group has been active and engaged with issues of safety in the city.

Simmons has been a stalwart at community meetings, where she had to navigate tricky waters at a recent crime meeting at Nathan Bishop where protestors demanded attention by the Mayor for their own issues of policing and crime in the city.  Day in, day out, Simmons keeps Providence residents informed — and engaged — and serves as a valuable resource for East Side residents.
