Man Arrested in East Side Attack Will Now Face Felony Charge - Assault With Deadly Weapon

Providence police confirmed Wednesday that charges in the Sunday morning attack of a couple walking to Thayer Street on the East Side of Providence will now include felony assault.

As GoLocal first reported on Monday, Pawtucket resident Kelvin Colon was arrested after he allegedly ambushed the couple visiting from out of town, punching them, threatening them with a metal pipe, and chasing them in a car, driving the wrong way down a city street and hopping a curb.

He was originally charged with a misdemeanor.

GoLocal reported on Wednesday that Colon had been arrested just weeks prior for another assault on the East Side — and at that time, was released on bail.

“After reviewing the [most recent] case, we have upgraded one of the charges to a felony — assault with a deadly weapon,” Providence Police Major David Lapatin confirmed on Wednesday. “He will also face three additional charges, including simple assault.”

Colon, who is currently being held at the ACI, is due back in court on September 8.
