Patricia Morgan: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

The House Deputy Minority Leader was first elected to the chamber in 2010, but by her leadership, you would think Patricia Morgan has served there longer.

In 2015, the fiscal conservative was a vocal presence at the Rhode Island State House, calling for the end to HealthSource RI as well as moral obligation bonds, and for taxpayers to be able to vote directly on any PawSox-to-Providence deal (which never transpired).  The Morgan-led Republican Policy Group took a deep dive into the finances of the Rhode Island Convention Center, calling for more fiscal accountability and using lessons learned as future warning signs for similar deals -- with an emphasis on the PawSox.

One of the most visible efforts led by Morgan in 2015 has been the continued push to look at how Governor Raimondo’s infrastructure plan RhodeWorks will be funded, which currently calls for truck tolls to fund the bonding.  In October, the Republican Policy Group, spearheaded by Morgan, released their road repair plan that they said would levy no new fees or tolls.

"We remain committed to open dialogue with all, regardless of political affiliation, in order to reach common ground and stop the damage that tolls and massive debt financing will wreak on our state's taxpayers, consumers, small businesses and trucking industry," said Morgan

Truck tolls are slated to be taken up during the next General Assembly session — one that falls during and election year for all seats in the body.  Watch for politics to be even more at play in a loaded political year.
