Who Will be the Next House Democratic Majority Leader?

DeSimone is Out
The political body of John DeSimone is not even cold yet, but already three candidates have emerged and are looking for votes of their fellow Democrats. DeSimone is still seeking a recount from election officials in his loss to Marcia Ranglin-Vassell.

While the Speaker of the House is elected by the body as a whole, the Majority Leader is elected by his party and doesn’t need to wait for the House to come into session in January of 2017.

The candidates who are dialing for votes are:

Joe Shekarchi
Joe Shekarchi - A power broker who ran Gina Raimondo’s campaign for General Treasurer in 2010 is a major force in the House, but he also has his own political orbit. He is close with Raimondo, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and the Congressional delegation.

Pros: He has $500,000 in the bank.

Cons: Could be perceived as a double agent for Raimondo - so much for separation of powers.

Chris Blazejewski
Chris Blazejewski - The Harvard-educated, East Sider is the unofficial head of the progressives in the House. He is affable and smart, but is he too East Side?

Pros: The combination of Blazejewski and Mattiello is an ideologically balanced leadership team that would lock almost every member into lock-step.

Cons: Leadership teams are not run by balanced ideologies but are built on power and trust. Do opposites attract?

John Lombardi
John Lombardi - The dark horse candidate. The former acting Mayor of Providence and long-time City Councilman scored big points with some when he endorsed Anastasia Williams and may have saved her from defeat. Lombardi is the master of the favor and well-liked.

Pros: Could be a good compromise candidate over Blazejewski and Shekarchi.

Con: Not strong personal relationship with Mattiello and no ideological base.
