Former Rhode Island College head coach Bob Walsh, now the coach of the University of Maine, returns to Providence on Tuesday to face the Providence College Friars at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

"It's going to be really exciting for me to be at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. I was 26 when I was coaching at Providence, I grew up there, so it is going to be really special for me and I know the Dunk is a magical place," Walsh told GoLocalProv.

While at RIC, Walsh led the Anchormen to eight straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and an overall record of 204-63. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Providence College for seven seasons.

Maine

The Black Bears come into Providence with an overall record of 4-7, having won two of their last three games. On Wednesday, December 7 the Black Bears beat defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross and on Saturday,, December 10 they beat Dartmouth college.

Most recently, they suffered a ten-point loss to Quinnipiac on Sunday, December 18.

"The biggest challenge for us has been to establish a winning mentality here. When you look at a team like PC, they expect to win every night whether they are playing Maine or Ohio State. For us, we are trying to ge to that mentality," Walsh said.

The Black Bears are led by junior guard Wes Myers, who is averaging a team high 14.7 points per game, while Andrew Flemming averages 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

"For us to be successful we have to be really tough in the back court and play really good team defense. Then offensively we are going to need to be really unselfish and have really good spacing," Walsh said.

PC - Two Things to Watch

For Providence, this is their final home game of a six-game home stand and their second to last game before conference play begins. PC is 9-2 overall and have won five straight games.

"They are playing with a chip on their shoulder, I've been really really impressed with what I have seen of them," Walsh said about the Friars.

Defense - The Friars come in only allowing 59 points per game, good enough for 11th best in the country. They have given up 60 points or less in three of their last four games.

Kyron Cartwright - Cartwright is ranked fourth in the country with an average of eight assists per game following the Wagner game in which he dished out 11 assists.

He has reached double-digit assists in two straight games and in three games total on the year.

This season, Providence has put emphasis on trying to beat the half court defense by pushing the ball up the floor quickly. Cartwright has helped that with his ability to throw length of the floor passes.
