5 Live Music Musts—June 13, 2014
Voices Under Cover Play Lucinda Williams
Voices Under Cover is a unique acoustic series organized by local singer-songwriter John Fuzek. Each show focuses on the music of a well-known national artist; tonight it’s alt-country diva, Lucinda Williams. Four RI divas - Becky Chace, Allysen Callery, Tracie Potochnik and Heather Rose - will be playing her songs. Tonight’s show is at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in North Kingston and tickets are $10 at the door. Music starts at 8PM.
Thompson Square at the Wolf Den
The Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun is a popular venue at the Casino that offers free shows that are more intimate than the larger arenas. Tonight, it’s Thompson Square, the husband wife team who won the 2013 Academy of Country Music award for “Best Vocal Duo”. And tomorrow night, you can check out popular indie singer-songwriter Ben Kweller. Both shows at 8PM.

Living legend Ringo Starr arrives at PPAC Sunday June 15th with his All Starr band. We checked earlier this week with local experts and confirmed that this is the third time a Beatle has performed in Rhode Island – George Harrison played a momentous show in 1974 at the Civic Center and a previous version of Ringo’s band rocked out at the revered Warwick Musical Theatre in 1995. The current edition of his band includes Steve Lukather of Toto as well as the great Todd Rundgren. The 7:30PM show is sold out, but check here for any last minute tickets. Delta Rae at the Met
Next Wednesday July 18th at The Met, be sure to catch North Carolina’s breakout country-pop band Delta Rae. The band is riding a wave of critical acclaim with their new release, Chasing Tornados, which features the hit “If I Loved You,” recorded with Lindsay Buckingham. They’ve got what it takes – see them before they hit it really big. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Gabe Dixon opens at 8PM.
Dierks Bentley at the Newport Yachting Center
Thursday June 19th, you can find country singer-songwriter Dierks Bentley at the Newport Yachting Center as part of the Newport Concert Series. His 11 Grammy nominations confirm his status as a top notch country star, and he’s known to really connect with his fans at concerts. Jillian Cardarelli opens on the main stage with Lisa Martin on the Hear in RI Point Stage at 6PM. Tickets range from $30.50 – $75.50.

Newport Folk Festival

Folk music has been a presence in Newport since 1959, when the Newport Folk Festival was founded by George Wein. Backed by board members Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, and Albert Grossman, the Festival became renowned for introducing a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez (who appeared as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959), and Bob Dylan, whose first Newport appearance, as a guest of Joan Baez in 1963, is generally regarded as his premiere national performance.
